In the room was a collection of all of my favorite belongings. Memories and items of sentiment, that reminded me of the people I had loved, and the treasured experiences of my life.
I knew my family had gathered in the next room, because my death was imminent. I could sense their presence.
A great-great-grandson quietly entered the room, comfortably sitting on the end of my bed with discernable fondness.
He came to share a funny joke with me. His eyes danced with delight in the sharing, because he knew this joke was going to make me laugh.
And I did.
A full belly laugh, with tears in my eyes from the ache. His mission was accomplished, with that, he placed a warm kiss on my forehead and left the room.
Can you remember a time where you laughed so much you cried?
As you might have experienced yourself, after a full belly laugh, I took a big satisfied breath.
Exhaling the breath with satisfaction, and with a contented smile, I took what I knew was my last breath.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all die peacefully in our sleep after a full belly laugh?
Sometimes it’s best to start with the end in mind.

From a simple visualization exercise, I was able to figure out what I valued, what I was passionate about, and what experiences I aspired to create in my lifetime.
From capturing the vision, it was a simple exercise to reverse engineer everything I experienced from there, looking at the assumptions I could make from what I had witnessed.
Considering I was old and gray-haired, I knew longevity was a factor. The medical intervention in the room was minimal. And I felt comfortable. So I knew health had been one of my priorities.
I did not want for anything in that space, it was my own room with my own belongings. So I knew wealth had been one of my priorities. I had access to a level of care, and I felt very well taken care of in those last moments. I was not in pain. And I was not afraid. I knew I was able to afford decent end of life care.
The fact that my family was present, including great-great-grandchildren, I knew I had prioritized relationships.
And the fact my great-great-grandson came to share a joke, knowing I would laugh, meant he knew me well and I had maintained a good sense of humor. Which meant I still had the mental faculties and wherewithal to understand and enjoy a clever joke. So I had prioritized my mental, emotional and social health.
From here it was easy to see where I wanted my life to end.
With this insight and inspiration, I created the first draft of my beautiful life plan, a long-term plan where I invited myself to look at where I would like to be in 5, 10, 15 and 30 years.
